Companies and businesses are at the forefront of tackling climate change. You could decide to switch your energy systems to a cheaper, greener alternative. Or you could raise awareness of climate change through an employee event. There are plenty of simple ways for your business to celebrate earth day that will help your business to work sustainably. Every change a UK business makes, to a greener practice, is a positive change.
What is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual event, as part of a year-round effort to promote a healthier Earth by supporting climate protection. Earth Day is your chance to learn more about how your business can make positive changes, to help your business and the planet to thrive.
There are plenty of online seminars and events which you can attend. You can also make your own event too. It’s an important time of year to review your company practice and consider what changes you can make to run your business more efficiently.
4 Simple Ways For Your Business To Celebrate Earth Day
1) Make an Earth Day window sign
Raising awareness is a core part of business climate activism. Making an Earth Day sign for your window with whatever you have to hand is a brilliant place to start. No creativity is needed for this one and the Earth Day website even gives you a list of phrases that you can write (or make up your own!)
- Once you’ve finished your sign, write down the Earth Day website or use the hashtag #EarthDay2021, so people who see your sign know where to look to learn more.
- What if your windows are not the best place? Show your support and company values by posting a picture of your sign onto your social media page this week. As an added bonus; ask your clients to tag you in their signs too!
2) Company initiatives to raise awareness
Make it a team event by organising a company litter pick either around your workplace or local area. Or have a ‘Meat-Free Monday’ where your canteen or employees explore the vast array of veggie or vegan alternatives. Let them know why you’re doing this beforehand. Otherwise, they might just be too distracted by the lack of breakfast bacon instead!
- Want to involve your team even further? Get them to send in their suggestions and have a vote together for the best option.
- Your event can be registered and included on the Earth Day’s world map of events too which is very exciting!
3) Go to an event
Join in by going to one of the many events already on the Earth Day website. We found this online breakfast webinar on how strategic business action can transform both business and the environment, which we thought looked very interesting. The webinar is organised by and includes two speakers from the Suffolk Sustainability Institute.
4) Pledge a Green Plan – as a company or as an individual
Last year, the UK Government launched their 10 Point Plan For A Green Industrial Revolution (link to blog post). Did you know that you could create your own Act of Green? You can do this either as a personal pledge or ask each of your employees/colleagues to join you.
- This could be to bring reusable utensils to work, to implement more recycling bins in the building or to save on your water expenditure.
- Visit the Earth Day’s website for more information on their work around the world to drive meaningful action for the planet.
What else? How can this help my business?
If the carbon footprint of your business can be calculated to zero, then you are eligible to receive an ISO certification. This is internationally recognised and proves that you are fulfilling your corporate social responsibility, by being a carbon-neutral business. ISO accreditation safeguards your company’s reputation for the future. Additionally, reducing your environmental impact helps your business to run more efficiently and saves you money on your running costs.

Recently, a new climate law has been announced in the UK to cut carbon emissions by 78% by the year 2035. The quickest way to reach this goal is to switch your current energy systems from fossil fuels to renewable energy systems. Solar energy systems can power all the needs of a business in the UK. This even includes the heating, even on a typical, cloudy British day! If your business relies on company cars or vans, another alternative is to consider electric car technology.
