Sustainable cloud computing

Over the next few months, we will be posting a series of short articles to help SMEs to understand the advantages of moving their in-house computing to cloud computing.  Our director, Stuart, will be sharing how he has helped a charity not only transform their computing usage but also lower their carbon footprint significantly by the move to cloud computing.

Stuart writes…

When I started out as a Systems Administrator in 1986, the only model for non-desktop computer server provision was physical servers that were on-site and needed to be housed in an air-conditioned server room environment.  For those of you interested in computing history, we had a DEC VAX 11/750 which had 12MB of memory, 3MHz CPU, 623MB disk and supported around 12 VT220 terminals!

Nowadays, almost everyone has heard of cloud computing and there are many advantages of moving from a traditional in-house computing to cloud computing, many of which also help your company’s sustainability in a number of ways:

  • Reduced energy consumption.
    • Cloud data centers are typically more energy-efficient than on-premises data centers, as they can use economies of scale
  • Increased use of renewable energy.
    • Cloud providers are increasingly investing in renewable energy to power their data centers, which helps to reduce the overall environmental impact
  • Reduced hardware requirements.
    • Cloud computing allows businesses to access the computing resources they need without having to purchase and maintain their own hardware, which can save energy and resources
  • Improved efficiency.
    • Cloud computing can help businesses to improve the efficiency of their IT operations, which can lead to reduced energy consumption and other environmental benefits
  • Increased flexibility.
    • Cloud computing allows businesses to scale their IT resources up or down as needed, which can help to reduce energy consumption and other environmental impacts
  • Reduced waste.
    • Cloud computing can help businesses to reduce the amount of electronic waste they generate, as they can access the computing resources, they need without having to purchase and dispose of their own hardware

Overall, cloud computing can be a powerful tool for helping businesses to reduce their environmental impact. By moving to the cloud, businesses can save energy, reduce waste, and improve efficiency.  Added to this, cloud computing offers many advantages over traditional in-house computing. If you’re looking for a way to save money, improve scalability, increase flexibility, improve security, improve reliability, and improve disaster recovery, then cloud computing is the right choice for you.

Our next post in this series will be looking at the ways we can think about cloud computing.  In the meantime, please do comment below or contact us and I’ll put together a sustainability computing profile for your business.
